Are Video Games Considered a Sport?

There’s five seconds left in the game and the score is 43 to 44.

He dribbles down the court and takes a three, angh! The buzzer goes

off! The ball soars through the air and into the net, a buzzer beater

the crowd goes wild!

NBA 2K20

Right now you may be thinking this is a basketball game.

Technically it is, but it’s a virtual one. NBA 2k 20, a basketball

video game is actually considered an esport (electronic sport).

Certain video games not all being related to real life sports are

considered esports. These esports can be played by anyone but

esports teams have positions on their team and they communicate

like a real sport.  Esports puts on competitions and challenges for

esports teams. Esports teams can go against each other to win

trophies and money just like real sports. At these esports events

people come and watch the teams compete.

Some people say that video games should not be considered sports

because they do not require athleticism or conditioning. If kids are

told video games are a sport they will be more likely to practice playing

video games than being outside practicing their sport and being active.

Practicing a sport keeps them moving around instead of sitting and not

doing anything.  Some video games are already considered sports and

have commentators just like espn. These esports aren’t as popular as

ESPN but they can be watched on websites like twitch a streaming

website.

I think video games should not be considered a sport but video

game competitions and tournaments are cool, and I enjoy watching

them. For now many video games are just played for fun but maybe

in the future they will become more popular.

  1. I really liked how you talked about how if video games were considered a sport then kids would sit and practice them for hours, and not actual sports.

  2. I agree with your decision because not as much skill is required to play Esports but it is also really fun to watch.
